Richard Yoast, Ph.D.

Retired, former Director of the American Medical Association

Dr. Richard Yoast, retired as director of the American Medical Association (AMA) in 2010. At the
AMA, he directed two National Program Offices funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation:
Reducing Underage Drinking through Coalitions; and A Matter of Degree, 10 campus-community
partnerships working to reduce high-risk drinking. In addition to managing these national alcohol
prevention programs, Dr. Yoast coordinated the development of AMA white papers on alcohol and other drug abuse policy. Dr. Yoast also served on the Executive Work Group of the national “Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free.” Before joining the AMA, Dr. Yoast served as Director of Tobacco Control for the State of Wisconsin Department of Health and Social Services, and directed that state’s implementation of the National Cancer Institute ASSIST (American Stop Smoking Intervention Study) Project in collaboration with the American Cancer Society and some thirty- two state and local coalitions. Founder of the Wisconsin Clearinghouse and Prevention Resource Center on Alcohol and Other Drugs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Yoast won several awards for his leadership in state policy development and professional excellence. He has published policy and program development papers in a wide range of journals and for governmental bodies, has presented at many national and international conferences and has been a consultant for federal agencies and state governments.
